The Meaning of Alyssa

What's up with the name Alyssa? We just finished watching an "Alyssa" win the US Figure Skating Championship. I thought she looked like Alyssa Milano. And now that we're watching Family Guy, Brian just walked up to a girl in high school and called her Alyssa. So, I ask again, "What's the significance with the name Alyssa?"
