The Next Simon Cowell
In college, at the University of Kansas, I was part of Rock Chalk Revue (RCR) for three years (as a chorus member year one, a "Vogue" dance year two, and finally as director in year three).
To break it down, the show (which raises money for the United Way) comprises of five fraternity/sorority collaborations selected from an initial 20 or so who submitted a 20-30 minute musical with script, set design, character drawings, musical numbers (both original and borrowed) accompanied by an in-studio demo of all the songs to be featured in the show. Back in 1993, we (being Pi Kappa Alpha) spent almost $20K on our entry with Pi Beta Phi. I was one of five directors on our show.
After performing the musical six times in March, awards are handed out on Saturday night after judging takes place the nights before. Our show, Off the Wall grabbed five including "Best Show." That night, with my family and friends in the audience, was one of my most memorable in college. Collecting those awards, after almost a year of planning and producing, topped of a wonderful four year run at the University of Kansas.
To celebrate RCR's 60th anniversary, I'm returning in March to partake in the activities (along with a few RCR alums) - including being a judge on Friday night. It's hard to imagine that 16 years after winning, I'm going to return as a judge. It may seem a bit trivial, but believe me, when you've worked so hard, and it all comes down to one night when statues are awarded, you truly become overwhelmed.
What a night, weekend actually, it will be.
