Laundry Build-up

Why does it seem as though you can never get ahead of your laundry? Maybe it's because we live in Europe where the machine sizes are about half that of their US counterparts. All I know is I sort my laundry, I make my way through half, then additional piles start to collect just as I'm finishing. Having dirty gym clothes everyday doesn't help I suppose.
